Elephants, Savannas & Wildlife Safaris

Introduction and History

Udawalawe National Park was officially declared on 30 June 1972 to protect wildlife displaced by the construction of the Udawalawe Reservoir on the Walawe River. The park covers about 30,821 hectares (≈ 308.2 km²) and spans parts of Sabaragamuwa and Uva provinces. It was established both to preserve the reservoir’s catchment region and to serve as a refuge for elephants and other fauna impacted by land use changes. Over time, Udawalawe has become one of Sri Lanka’s most accessible and reliable parks for elephant sightings.

Best Time to Visit

The dry season (May to September) is considered ideal for wildlife viewing, as animals gather near water sources. The park remains open year-round, unlike some parks that close during monsoon seasons. Early morning and late afternoon safaris offer the best lighting and most active animal behavior.
