The Sinharaja Forest Reserve is Sri Lanka’s last remaining tract of primary lowland tropical rainforest, famed for its extremely high biodiversity and endemism. It covers about 8,864 hectares (~88.64 km²). In 1978 it was designated a Biosphere Reserve and in 1988 a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The forest lies within the Sabaragamuwa / Southern region, spanning the districts of Ratnapura, Galle, and Kalutara. More than 50% of its plant species and many animals are endemic to Sri Lanka, making it critical for conservation.
The drier months — January to March and August to mid-October — are considered the best for trekking and wildlife spotting, with less heavy rainfall. The forest receives substantial rainfall year-round, so rain is possible even in dry months. Avoid the peak monsoon periods of November–December and May–July, when trails can become muddy or impassable.

In the forest fringe, many lodging places serve in-house meals (local Sri Lankan style) due to lack of commercial restaurants. Some tours include a lunch prepared by the guide or host as part of the trekking package. Outside in Deniyaya, local eateries will offer Sri Lankan fare (rice & curry, etc.).
