Heritage Port City & Fort Town

Introduction and History

Galle (originally called Gimhathiththa) was an important port town even before European arrival. The Portuguese arrived in the early 1500s and built initial fortifications; later the Dutch extensively fortified and expanded the fort in the 17th century, shaping much of what is seen today. Galle served as the island’s principal port under European colonial powers and was a trading hub for spices, cinnamon, and other goods. The Old Town of Galle and its Fortifications is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized for its blend of European architecture with South Asian traditions.

Best Time to Visit

The dry season — December to April — is ideal for exploring the fort, walking the ramparts, and enjoying coastal weather with less rain. Rainy months (May to November) see stronger afternoon showers, which can hinder outdoor walking and views.
